Product weight and box size
How courier prices are worked out, and how to keep them right.
Courier companies charge by weight and by size, whichever comes to more. A big box of something light can cost as much as a small box of something heavy, because it takes up the same room in the van.
So every courier price on your shop is worked out from two things: what the order weighs, and the size of the box it goes in.
Setting them on a product
Open the product and find the Delivery card on the right.
Weight, packed: what one item weighs in kilograms, with its packaging. A pair of shoes in their box is usually around 1 kg. A necklace in a pouch is closer to 0.1 kg.
Box size: Pouch, Small box, Medium box or Large box. Pick the one this item would be posted in on its own.
Both are optional. Leave them blank and your shop's usual weight and box size are used instead.
Options can have their own weight
If one option weighs more than the others, like "Pack of 3" next to a single, open the product's Sizes and colours and type its weight on that option. Leave it blank and the option weighs the same as the product.
Your shop's usual figures
Under Delivery, the Parcels section holds three things used for every product that has not set its own:
Typical weight of one item. This is one item, packed, not a whole order. It cannot be lower than 0.5 kg. If your products are lighter, set the real weight on each one.
Usual box size. The box most of your items go in.
What you mostly sell. Some couriers do not carry every kind of item, so this decides which couriers are asked for a price.
When an order has several items
They are packed into one box, big enough to hold everything. Three small boxes' worth of items is priced as a medium box, not a small one.
Why it matters
When a courier collects a parcel, they can weigh and measure it. If it is heavier or bigger than what was declared, they charge the difference. Getting the weight and size right at the start is what keeps the price your customer paid the price the delivery really costs.
Only couriers who collect
Your customers only see couriers who come to your pickup address. You never have to take a parcel to a drop-off station.
